Two students and two faculty members delivered excellent performances in this year’s Royal Victoria Marathon. Listed as one of the top 10 destination marathons in North America by Runner’s World Magazine, the marathon attracts nearly 10,000 competitors a year. The event features a half-marathon, an eight-kilometre run and 1.2 kilometre kids’ run.
The Senior School students entered the 8k race. Head boy Michael van der Westhuizen ran a solid race and ended up with a time of 30 minutes and 41 seconds. He took fifth place in his age group and was 37th out of the 1756 runners. Grade 10 student Mark Wizinsky flew through the course with a time of 33 minutes and 31 seconds, making him second in his age group and 73rd overall.
In the marathon, Middle School staff member Nancy Mollenhauer took 930th place out of 1979 marathoners. While sporting a toque to cover her recently-shaved head, she ran the 42.2 kilometres in just over four hours. Athletics Director and West Coast Trail runner Jeff Hunt had a strong showing with a time of three hours and 20 minutes. He captured 174th place, placing him well within the top 10 per cent.
