The SMUS community raised another $10,000 for the Endowment fund this week by bringing out their golf clubs and their wallets. Thursday afternoon was the annual SMUS Alumni and Friends Golf Invitational, which took place at the Cordova Bay Golf Course.
Though the weather could have been better, the spirits couldn’t have been higher, as over a hundred alumni, parents, and staff played 18 holes and had a chance at some donated prizes. Around the course were three hole-in-one-prizes, including a baby grand piano, a golf trip for two to San Diego, and a BMW Mini. “There was a great spirit out on the course,” says Cliff Yorath, the event organizer.
The dinner took place in the ‘Golfer’s Lounge’ and was hosted by Nick Grant of the Alumni Association. Guests enjoyed a slideshow of pictures and videos taken throughout the afternoon while they enjoyed drinks and dinner. Parents and alumni of all ages enjoyed each other’s company well into the evening, and many won some of the 45 raffle prizes, valued at just under $7000.
The big winners of the night were Dionne Baker, a SMUS parent, who took home a Phoenix Suns jersey signed by Steve Nash and Mieke Wizinsky, Head of the Parents’ Auxiliary won a 32” LCD high-definition television. Mr. Yorath is expecting next year’s event to have an even longer guest list and says there are a few exciting changes coming up for 2008.
